Frank’s Swim School began in 1968 with one simple belief held by its founder, Frank Liebmann: every child deserves to feel safe, confident, and joyful in the water. Frank wasn’t just a swim instructor – he was a patient teacher, a community builder, and the kind of man who made families feel cared for the moment they walked through the door.
DYK: Frank’s Swim School is the only swim school in Ontario and likely in the entire country that has been vetted by the provincial government and given the status of an educational institution.
Parents start their children as early as 3 months to build safety skills and life-long confidence. It’s a joy to see their children come back after finishing their instructor certifications to teach the next generation how to swim and share their love of the water. We are blessed to have so many former instructors and students that have grown with us then bring their children to our friendly successful learning environment that is second to none.
For decades, parents across Toronto trusted Frank to guide their children through their earliest moments in the pool. His teaching style was warm and steady, rooted in respect for each child’s pace. His commitment shaped thousands of young swimmers some of whom now bring their own children to the pool.
Frank retired from teaching in 2001 but still frequently came in and assisted in the water. He left behind a legacy woven into the lives of countless Toronto families. His spirit lives on every day in the school he built with so much heart.
Today, Frank’s Swim School is led by Frank’s son, Mike Liebmann; a lifelong swimmer, instructor, and keeper of the family mission.
Mike grew up poolside, absorbing the rhythm, patience, and philosophy his father cultivated over decades. Under Mike’s leadership, the school has expanded its programs, refined its curriculum, and continued to honour what made Frank’s Swim School so special:
Mike regularly continues to be in the water with classes himself lending a hand, a rarity in today’s corporate swim-school landscape. Parents often say his calm, encouraging approach reminds them of Frank.
Frank’s Swim School isn’t a franchise. It’s not a chain. It’s a family.
We believe:
These values guide every decision we make, from class ratios and instructor training to the pools we choose and the way we welcome our families each session.
Over the past 55+ years, Frank’s has become a quiet pillar in North York and the GTA. It’s the place families recommend to each other, generation after generation. You’ll find kids learning their first kicks beside teens refining their strokes, parents cheering from the deck, and instructors celebrating every milestone, big or small.
More than anything, Frank’s is about helping kids feel capable. The water becomes a place where confidence and safety grow, skills strengthen, and friendships form. That’s the legacy Frank built, and the one Mike proudly continues.
